Your Legal Questions Answered
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a criminal lawyer cost in Ontario?
The cost of hiring a criminal lawyer in Ontario depends on the seriousness of the charge, the anticipated court process, and whether the matter proceeds to trial. At Trinity Criminal Defence, we use clear, structured block fees whenever possible so clients in London, Ontario and surrounding courts understand the financial commitment from the outset.
We also accept Legal Aid Ontario certificates for eligible matters. For private clients, a paid consultation provides meaningful legal advice and strategic direction from day one — not a brief sales meeting.
What should I do if I’m arrested or contacted by police?
If you are arrested or contacted by police in London or anywhere in Ontario, exercise your right to remain silent and request to speak with a criminal defence lawyer immediately.
Early legal advice is not a formality: it is protection. What you say in the first hours of a case can shape everything that follows. A criminal lawyer can ensure your rights are respected and help you avoid decisions that may compromise your defence.
Should I speak to the police before talking to a lawyer?
The short answer: no. Even well-intentioned explanations can unintentionally strengthen the prosecution’s case.
Before giving a statement in a criminal investigation — whether for assault, impaired driving, drug offences, or other charges — you should understand your rights and the potential consequences. Speaking with a criminal defence lawyer first allows you to make informed, strategic decisions rather than reactive ones.
Will I get a criminal record if I’m charged?
A criminal charge is not a conviction. Being charged in London or elsewhere in Ontario does not automatically result in a criminal record.
Many criminal charges in London and Southwestern Ontario resolve without a conviction through withdrawals, peace bonds, diversion programs, or discharges. Protecting your record — and your future employment, travel, and reputation — is central to our defence strategy.
What is the difference between a criminal charge and a conviction?
A criminal charge is simply a formal accusation/allegation which initiates legal proceedings. A conviction occurs only if you plead guilty or are found guilty after trial.
This distinction matters. Many individuals charged with criminal offences in London and all over Southwestern Ontario resolve their matters without a conviction. Early and strategic defence often shapes that outcome.
How long will my criminal case take?
There is no universal timeline for a criminal case in Ontario. The length depends on disclosure, court scheduling, negotiations with the Crown, and whether the case proceeds to trial.
In London and surrounding courts, some matters resolve within months, while more serious or complex cases may take years. From the first appearance onward, we ensure you understand each stage and the strategic decisions being made.
Can my charges be dropped?
Criminal charges in Ontario may be withdrawn or stayed where the evidence is insufficient, Charter rights were breached, credibility issues arise, or a negotiated resolution is appropriate.
While no criminal defence lawyer can promise a particular outcome, we can assure you that we will carefully review disclosure and assess the evidence critically to pursue the strongest possible resolution.
What courthouses do you serve?
Trinity Criminal Defence represents clients at the London Courthouse (80 Dundas Street) and throughout Southwestern Ontario, including St. Thomas, Woodstock, Sarnia, Stratford, and Goderich. On occasion, we also appear in other courts in Ontario, such as Brantford, Kitchener, Toronto, and Newmarket.
If you are seeking a criminal lawyer in London, Ontario or the surrounding region, we regularly appear in these courts and understand their procedures, expectations, and local practices.
Do you accept Legal Aid Ontario clients?
Yes. We accept Legal Aid Ontario certificates for many criminal matters.
If you have your Legal Aid Client Number (CLT) and Certificate Number (CE), you may book a free consultation at our London criminal defence office. We approach Legal Aid files with the same preparation and strategic focus as private retainers.
What should I do if I miss a court date?
Missing a court appearance in Ontario can result in a bench warrant and additional charges. If you have missed court in London or another Southwestern Ontario courthouse, seek legal advice immediately.
Prompt action often limits further consequences. We can bring the matter back before the court in an organized and professional manner and work to stabilize the situation quickly.
